    This 12 month in person Doula Mentorship Program, is meant to empower doulas and create a strong community. As a passionate advocate for doulas and birth work, I am committed to guiding doulas to becoming the best version of yourself, all while offering holistic support to your clients.

    Together, we will cultivate a nurturing, compassionate, and resilient community. Through my mentorship program, you'll embark on a transformative 180-hour in-person learning experience, enriched with hands-on guidance and support. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to shadow me during client consultations, prenatal visits, postpartum visits, births, and birth debriefs, gaining invaluable real-world experience.

The Modules

Module 1 - Introduction to Doula Work

In the first module we’re starting with the basics. Doulas will learn about what a doula is and how the role has evolved over time. We’ll talk about the importance of being ethical and following different guidelines in our work. We’ll also cover the legal aspects, such as obtaining consent and understanding our responsibilities. Learning how to work effectively with Doctors, Midwives, Nurses, and other members on the Medical team when needed. This includes how to communicate well with the people we’re supporting and the medical team when necessary. We’ll focus on developing active listening skills and showing empathy without always using our words. Building strong relationships with the people we support and their families will be a key aspect of our training. We’ll also explore some techniques to help people relax and use mindfulness to feel more at ease, both for yourself and your clients.

Module 2 -Trauma Informed Care Fundamentals

In the second module mentees will gain an understanding of different types of trauma and their potential impact on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum experience. Doulas will learn how to create a nurturing environment for individuals both with and without trauma history, focusing on principles of trauma informed care. Doulas will be trained to recognize triggers and offer comfort during challenging moments. Doulas will gain insights into identifying signs of birth trauma and connecting clients with relevant support resources. This module will stress the importance of respecting informed consent and autonomy. We will also discuss patient rights and hospital policy within the framework of the medical industrial complex. Doulas will explore power dynamics in healthcare and learn how to navigate these to advocate effectively for their clients. Additionally, we will develop skills to support survivors through their healing journey. The modules will emphasize that birth trauma and obstetric violence can originate from various sources, including OBs, Doctors, Midwives, Nurses, partners, doulas, family members and friends.

Module 3 - Advocacy, Empowerment and Informed Decision Making

The third module is designed to guide doulas in understanding the key aspects of their role as it pertains to advocacy and informed decision making. Doulas will learn the importance of informed consent and how to support their clients in making their own decisions. We will explore how to work together with medical teams, considering the ethics of speaking up for our clients. Doulas will be taught to share their knowledge effectively, empowering the clients they support to express their needs and preferences. Additionally you will gain skills to navigate the sometimes complicated medical system, ensuring the best support for their clients during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

Module 4 - Supporting Physiological Labour and Common Birth Complications

In this module doulas will learn how to support birthing individuals during childbirth. We will discuss the natural processes of their bodies and how to provide assistance without relying heavily on medical interventions. Doulas will also explore ways to understand and address the emotional experiences of birthing individuals during labour, and how you can provide effective support. We will delve into the importance of the baby’s position and how to ensure their well-being. Doulas will also learn techniques to help alleviate discomfort for pregnant individuals. Together we will cover how to handle unexpected situations during childbirth and how to assist in repositioning the baby if needed.

Module 5 - Building Trust and Rapport

In this module we focus on developing important skills for supporting individuals during important life events. Learning how to listen carefully and understand body language, making it easier to connect with clients and their families. We practice handling tough conversations with care and respect. We also explore ways to provide support to those who have experienced trauma, showing kindness and understanding. We understand how to share in the feelings of others and make sure they know their emotions are valid. Lastly, we create a safe and welcoming space for everyone, free from judgment

Module 6 - Self-Care and Nurturing Your Mental Health

This module will explore the fundamental principles of self-care, highlighting its crucial role in fostering mental and emotional well-being. Doulas will be guided through the process of crafting personalized self-care plans tailored to their specific needs and circumstances. Additionally, the module will delve into various stress management techniques, equipping doulas with practical tools to effectively manage and alleviate stress. It will also emphasize the establishment and maintenance of healthy boundaries with clients, fostering a professional environment conducive to positive interactions and mutual respect. Strategies for building emotional resilience and identifying and addressing the signs of doula burnout will be discussed, enabling doulas to proactively manage their emotional health. Moreover, the module will shed light on safety planning, covering essential topics such as car safety, location sharing, implementing a harassment clause, and recognizing critical consultation pink and red flags for ensuring a safe and secure working environment.

Module 7 - Exploring Diverse Perspectives in Reproductive Journeys and Postnatal Care

In this module will delve into a range of complex topics, starting with ethical considerations and legal frameworks surrounding surrogacy arrangements. Participants will gain an understanding of the intricate emotional dynamics involved for both the surrogate and the intended parents, and will learn how to provide non-judgmental and empathetic support throughout the surrogacy process. The module will analyze the effects of maternal age and weight on pregnancy outcomes and postpartum recovery, emphasizing the importance of tailoring support and guidance based on these considerations. Furthermore, participants will explore the benefits and challenges of various feeding methods, including breastfeeding, chest feeding, and body feeding, and will receive comprehensive guidance on latching techniques, milk supply, and postnatal nutritional needs. The module will address common challenges related to feeding and lactation, fostering a non-discriminatory and inclusive environment for individuals with diverse reproductive paths. Participants will also be equipped with the skills to understand and respect the cultural, social, and emotional aspects of various reproductive choices, enabling them to provide empathetic and culturally sensitive support to individuals navigating diverse reproductive journeys.

Module 8 - Cultural Competence and Inclusivity

This module is designed to provide an understanding of the significance of cultural diversity in the context of birth experiences, emphasizing the impact of various cultural backgrounds on the childbirth process. Participants will engage in discussions surrounding cultural humility and self-reflection, fostering an awareness of their own cultural biases and promoting a respectful approach towards diverse cultural practices. Effective cross-cultural communication techniques will be explored, enabling doulas to establish meaningful connections with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. The module will also examine the intersection of various identity factors, such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status, within the healthcare system, shedding light on the importance of addressing health disparities and advocating for equitable care for all clients. Furthermore, doulas will learn to create inclusive language in paperwork and everyday conversations, understand the nuances of working with neurodivergent clients, and recognize the influence of culture on trauma and grief rituals. The module will emphasize the necessity of tailoring doula care to cultural preferences, incorporating diverse cultural practices into support, and preserving the cultural heritage of clients.

Module 9 - Grief and Loss Support

In this module doulas will learn how to support families going through tough times when they lose a pregnancy or an infant. It covers different kinds of losses that can happen, and it teaches about the different feelings people might have during this hard time. Doulas learn how to be understanding and supportive, whether the loss happens at home or in the hospital. They also learn how to talk to families in a caring way and how to build trust with them. The module teaches simple ways to help families feel better, like creating special ceremonies to remember the baby. Doulas also learn about ways to help parents feel supported while they are sad and how to make the environment comforting and kind.

Module 10 - Supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ Families

The supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ families module will offer a comprehensive understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ terminology and identities, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for 2SLGBTQIA+ clients. Doulas will gain insights into the unique needs and challenges faced by this community, as well as the importance of using affirming language and communication. Family dynamics and support networks within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community will be explored, alongside a deep dive into navigating legal and policy considerations that may affect these families. The module will also focus on supporting transgender and non-binary individuals, emphasizing the significance of collaboration with 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations. Doulas will explore the specific experiences and considerations of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, shedding light on health disparities and barriers to care. Building trust and rapport with 2SLGBTQIA+ clients, advocacy within the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, trauma-informed care, and counseling and emotional support will be central themes throughout the module.

The advanced skills in trauma and grief-informed doula care module will provide a comprehensive understanding of complex grief and trauma, analyzing case studies to deepen participants' knowledge and practical application. Advanced communication techniques will be explored, enabling participants to effectively navigate sensitive conversations and build strong rapport with clients. Understanding mental health, including trauma responses, will be emphasized, alongside strategies for trauma-informed communication to ensure a supportive and empowering environment. The module will also focus on recognizing triggers and establishing boundaries, empowering clients in decision-making processes, and navigating ethical and legal considerations in trauma and grief-informed care.
