Dear Doulas

I want to begin by reminding you of the incredible journey you've chosen as a doula, a path filled with compassion, care, and unwavering support. Your dedication to walking alongside individuals during their most vulnerable moments is nothing short of extraordinary. So, as you navigate through the ups and downs of this profound work, please remember the immense value you bring to the lives you touch.

Being a doula is not just a profession; it's a calling, a calling to be there for people during one of the most vulnerable and important experiences of their lives. It's a commitment to providing emotional, physical, and informational support, to holding space for joy and grief, for advocating, and to celebrating the beautiful journey of birth. Your work and dedication is a testament to your empathy, strength, and love for humanity.

But dear doula, it is essential to understand that being a doula also means opening your heart to the unpredictable nature of human emotions. You may have in the past, maybe you will in the future or even recently encountered a situation where a client expressed some form of dissatisfaction with your services or their birth experience. It is important to remember that sometimes, despite your unwavering dedication, there are times when individuals may not experience the expected outcome. Their disappointment may not be a reflection of your skills or dedication; it may be a reflection of their own unique experiences and emotions.

In this field, you must be prepared to hold the pain and frustration of others, even when it's directed at you. Trauma and grief can be powerful forces that lead people to seek someone to blame, and it's not uncommon for doulas to become the target of these emotions. Remember, it's not about you; it's about the complex emotions that they may be carrying within them.

Take the time to work through your own emotions, this is a crucial aspect for your own mental and emotional health. It's essential to find someone you trust, whether it's a mentor, a colleague, or a close friend, to debrief the situation with. Sharing your experiences and feelings can provide valuable insights and an emotional release. Keep in mind, these challenging moments serve as opportunities for your personal growth. Continue to embrace the journey of doula work without fear, as it continually offers space for your development. Every experience, even the toughest ones, plays a role in shaping you into a more compassionate and empathetic birth worker.

You are doing heart work, dearest doula, and heart work can be both rewarding and challenging. Embrace the moments of joy and fulfillment that come from making a positive impact on someone's life. Revel in the beautiful relationships, connections and births you witness with clients who deeply appreciate your presence.

And when faced with moments of doubt or criticism, remind yourself and all fellow doulas and birth workers that your purpose transcends any single experience. You are part of a community of compassionate souls, united by the shared belief that every birthing person deserves respect, support, and love.

Keep your heart open, continue to learn and grow, and remember that you are making a profound difference in the world, one birth, one family at a time. Cherish the love you give, the lives you touch, and the transformation you bring to those you serve.

With all my love and admiration,

Amy xoxo
